TikTok is a cultural phenomenon that goes beyond just entertainment. The app offers a platform for self-expression, creativity and business growth. Personally, I love TikTok because it provides a space where I can truly be myself by posting and reposting videos of whatever I want. Not only can I watch videos for my own enjoyment, but I can also engage with others by sending them videos that may remind me of them. TikTok fosters a sense of connection and individuality that makes it stand out from other social media platforms.
I believe that teens love TikTok because it provides a unique outlet for creative expression. Whether that would be through dancing, lip-syncing or truly anything else. The app allows people to show their talents and personalities in ways that they are not normally able to. TikTok also helps teens connect with others who share similar interests, fostering a sense of community. One of my favorite things to do on the app is send my friends silly or relatable videos. Recently TikTok updated their app so friends can have “streaks” by sending each other videos. My friends and I take these streaks seriously and it has become a joke. Having someone send you a TikTok that reminds them of you is one of the best subtle compliments there is, whether it is sentimental or funny.
TikTok allows businesses to reach audiences they would not be able to without the platform. It allows for businesses to reach wider audiences and expand their reach by producing video ads for people to watch. Whether through influencer partnerships, sponsored content, or posts directly from the brand, businesses can creatively showcase their products and services to a vast and diverse audience. According to a study by Oxford Economics, TikTok contributed over $24 billion to the US economy in 2023. TikTok is especially good for small businesses who people would otherwise never hear of. The app gives these small businesses with limited marketing budgets the platform to gain significant exposure that they need to get their products out in the world to make a living.
While concerns about TikTok’s addictive nature, potential privacy issues and other drawbacks exist, it’s important to remember that these challenges are not unique to TikTok. Every app carries risks. Instead of focusing on the negatives, I choose to look at all the positive aspects of TikTok that make it a great app.
