The ALHS library is stocking new bookmarks.
Students Alistar Hites (10) and Given Saw (9) have been creating bookmarks for other students to enjoy. It began when media clerk Tina Miller asked Hites to create the bookmarks.
“I saw their talent and wanted to encourage their work and help build confidence,” Miller said. “Something may be a doodle to them, but means more to someone else.”
Hites has made three bookmark designs: ones with eyes, mushrooms and skulls.
“I just draw whatever I feel like,” Hites said.
Saw has made one bookmark so far. His design features Lego Batman.
“My favorite thing is the process and seeing it all come together,” Saw said.
Miller was inspired to start this project to help students showcase their talents and build their artistic confidence. The bookmarks are designed by students, but Miller creates them by providing cardstock the size of a bookmark for students to draw on. They can use any medium they choose. She then makes copies of their work and returns the originals. Finally, she copies and cuts out the bookmarks. In the end, all the extra work is worth it. Miller said the best part is “Seeing the excitement on the creator’s faces when other students have their art.”
If you are interested in designing a bookmark, stop by the Media Center and speak with Tina Miller. Everyone is welcome to design a bookmark.
