As someone who has lived in Minnesota her whole life, I am used to a white Christmas in December. I am also used to the white October, the white November, the white January and even the white February. It gets to a point where it’s just too much. I am not completely anti-snow, but I would much rather have snow in December to enjoy a white Christmas than snow for half of the year. Being in Minnesota, this usually isn’t realistic, so I am okay with no snow at all.
I don’t think that snow makes the holidays any better than they already are; it just makes them colder. There are places around the world that never see any snow, and they can celebrate holidays just fine. The idea of a perfect “White Christmas” is a tradition that many love, but it is time to realize that it isn’t the most important thing. It is a common sentiment to say that the holidays aren’t about presents or materialistic things. The holidays are about family, friends, and spreading love—not about the amount of snow on the ground.
Even growing up, I never loved the snow. I enjoyed activities that snow brought, like sledding or building snowmen, for about five minutes until I got cold. You would think that by growing up in Minnesota, I would be used to the cold months, but I never am. I’m the type of person who would much rather be inside under a blanket drinking hot cocoa than doing anything out in the cold.
As I’ve grown, I’ve come to dislike the snow more and more. Especially now that I am driving, I dread the slippery roads that snow brings. I get nervous going anywhere in the winter, not only because of the roads, but because of other drivers out on them. I believe that snow causes a lot more harm than good; it just takes one icy spot for someone to spin out and cause an accident.
The people who love snow and think it is absolutely necessary for a good winter often think about the first snowfalls, where it is pure, white, and fluffy. I can agree that this sight is gorgeous, but let’s wait a day until it turns to brown slush and see how much you want it then.
