As a person who fell asleep while watching “The Blair Witch Project” before they even got into the woods. I think that it’s safe to say that I don’t find scary movies entertaining.
I don’t find horror movies to be horrifying at all. In fact, I find them to be more gimmicky than anything. The plot is basically nonexistent and every single one is a carbon copy of all the others. Take “Friday the 13th” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street” for example. Both of the villains are deformed creatures who terrorize a bunch of brainless teenagers. Those said teenagers do nothing to resolve the root of the issue and instead just decide to hide in creepy basements and scream their heads off.
I believe the horror movie market is oversaturated as well with sequels and reboots of all the same stuff we’ve been seeing for the past 30 years. It’s just not entertaining anymore. For instance there are 7 “Scream” movies. People say that Scream was supposed to be a satirical take on horror movies and how they all follow the same tropes because that’s what the industry knows will make the most money. However, with all the sequels attached it becomes apparent that instead of being a critique of the film industry they have become exactly what they were making fun of.
In the realm of Halloween and fall movies, I find the silly and comforting ones to be more enjoyable and rewatchable. They are the movies I remember watching and laughing at with my family. This is why I would choose “Hocus Pocus” and “The Nightmare Before Christmas” over “A Nightmare on Elm Street” or “Halloween” any day of the week and I think you should do the same.
I personally find silly movies to reflect the fall season more. For me they are a needed escape from the stresses of midterms and math tests that often plague my fall season. After all, why would I want to stress out about fictional characters and plots when life is what is the most horrific.
