FX’s “Grotesquerie” is not for the weak stomached. Yet, I think there is something to be studied with this series.
The plot follows Detective Lois Tryon (Niecy Nash) and Sister Megan Duval (Micaela Diamond) as they follow a mysterious serial killer running a muck through their town. This serial killer, who calls himself Grotesquerie, seems to have an obsession with religion and games.
I was caught off guard when I saw that Travis Kelse (Ed Laclan) was a part of the cast, but the acting is amazing and Nash deserves her flowers for her role.
Not only is the acting captivating but so is how the show looks in general. The framing of the shots are beautiful. What makes it the most interesting is that it is set in contemporary time, but looks so retro because of the choice not to use modern technology and its darker color palette.
The themes were captivating as well. It explores how the use of vices fuels people into doing horrible things to themselves and others and also how religion can bring out the worst in people.
However, the gore and blood does not stop. Gore is one of the first things you see when you start watching and what you will most remember about the show. There is no doubt in my mind that this show deserves to be rated R. I think that gore can be used as a tool to shape the plot, but at this level it can be distracting from the narrative at some points used for shock value.
I do believe that this is some of Director and Writer Ryan Murphy’s best work. As a person who had been a fan of “American Horror Story”, which he also wrote and directed, I knew I had an Idea of what I was getting myself into.
With that being said this show had me nauseous at some points. Which is why if you are not comfortable with murder, gore, blood, nudity, abuse, self harm, alcohol, smoking, sex, or anything to do with these things this show is not for you.
