Homecoming can be seen as one of the most fun parts of the year but can also be seen as one of the most stressful. Homecoming seems to always land on a week when the weather is getting colder and assignments are heavy. You constantly hear about the different games going on and the events. In theory, it should be fun, but all these events seem to be catered to a specific group of people and don’t gear into others’ interests. It can lead to feelings of exclusion or feelings of needing to fit in with the bigger crowd. Homecoming should include everybody and incorporate different sorts of activities that anyone can do.
Although the dress-up days are fun to participate in, the themes never really switch around or get too interesting or different. It feels like they have the same dress-up days every year and just change the days they do them.
The costs of different things can overshadow the events. From the cost for formal attire and at times dress-up days. The stress of finding the perfect dress can be seen as an exciting thing for some ,but for others, it’s a nightmare. The tradition of having a new dress every year feels like it’s pushed onto people and causes an overconsumption problem. The dress will most likely not be worn the next year and will sit in someone’s closet before they either put it in storage or get rid of it.
The homecoming tradition is alive because it’s something we’ve always done. Instead, we should ask students what interests them and make new traditions.
