Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Say it one more time and he might just answer you.
The new “Beetlejuice” movie is finally out. After 36 years of waiting for more, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is out in theaters. With a cast we all remember from the old film, and newer faces we love too, everyone gets to see the mischief Beetlejuice causes this time. I personally thought the movie was very funny and entertaining. Although some of the humor was a tad inappropriate, it fit in with the movie and Beetlejuice. The film follows Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) and her daughter, Astrid (Jenna Ortega). Lydia has been working as a psychic medium running a TV show about “ghost homes” and running from the pain of a lost loved one. While her daughter thinks she’s just making it up, that ghosts don’t exist and her mom is just crazy. Although things go south when Lydia starts seeing a ghost she wishes to forget- Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton). As the whole family gathers for a funeral and wedding, Astrid runs into a ghost of her own. Despite not believing that her mother can see ghosts, or that they’re even real. So with Beetlejuice back in her life, and her daughter missing with a ghost, Lydia must face her fears and ask Beetlejuice for help. All while the Geuse himself is running from a soul sucking ex-wife.
We also get to see who I think is the best Beetlejuice character, Bob, one of the “shrinker” zombies who work for Beetlejuice in his office. But when Beetlejuice’s ex-wife Dolores is out on the hunt for revenge, Bob takes up the task of pretending to be Beetlejuice. Despite not having much screen time and not speaking a word, Bob ended up being my favorite character just because of how expressive and funny he was.
We also get to see some of Beetlejuice’s life as a human. I wasn’t expecting him to be that old, but after seeing his past his current self’s behavior makes a lot of sense. Although they did the flashback as an old-fashioned Italian film, even the words were in Italian, and I found that unique and enjoyable!
Now, the storyline itself of the movie was slightly all over the place, with Halloween weddings, soul sucking ex-wives, a soul music train to the afterlife, and a baby beetlejuice that likes eating flies and biting ankles. Yet it was entertaining and I’d definitely watch it again in a heartbeat. Although the sight of a baby Beetlejuice was rather unsettling.
Overall the entire movie was a rollercoaster of funny moments and oddly weird ones too. I was left shocked and amused by the end, and it definitely was a good sequel to the iconic bio-exorcist movie.
