The novel “Safe Haven” by Nicholas Sparks follows a girl named Erin. She has dealt with her drunk and abusive husband, Kevin, for far too long. Erin comes across a chance to finally get away and she takes it. 

Erin hopes she will be able to start a new life in the small town of Southport, North Carolina.

As Erin arrives in Southport, she instantly knows that this is where she wants to start over: a small, isolated town that brought Erin a sense of peace and comfort. 

Upon arriving in Southport, Erin takes on a new identity and calls herself Katie Feldman. Katie quickly picks up a job at the local restaurant, Ivan’s, and buys herself a small cabin just outside of town. 

Katie also quickly begins building relationships with her neighbor Jo and the local general store owner, Alex. 

Alex is a widowed father to two children, Josh and Lexie. A few years prior to Katie’s arrival in Southport, Alex’s wife died of cancer.

When Katie gets groceries, Alex tries to work up the courage to ask her out but can’t get past his guilt. Soon Alex reasons with himself that it is okay to move one especially since it was his late wife’s wish that he will find someone.

After Alex and Katie’s relationship began progressing, so did her relationship with his children. They ended up doing most things together as a found family. Lexie took a special interest in Katie, and they had a strong bond.

Katie believes she can finally settle and let go of the past, but little does she know back home Kevin is doing everything in his power trying to find her. 

Suspicions at Kevin’s work have been raised about his behavior recently, like getting accused of being drunk on the job. They finally have had enough and suspend him from working. This act made Kevin hit his breaking point and he is done waiting around to find Katie. He tracks her down and finds out all about her new life and is ready to put an end to it.

As the Fourth of July Carnival comes around Kevin is out to get Katie and to put an end to her and her new life.

Katie has always been conscious of what Kevin was capable of, but she never anticipated he would go this far.

If Alex knew how dangerous Kevin could really be, would he still risk it to be with Katie?
