Most students at ALHS are not hopping on a plane for Florida which means you might be looking for something to do during spring break. Instead of staying home to do nothing, here are some things that you can do over break for free or minimal cost.
Let’s start at home. There are lots of things that are available for free at your own house. Most of these can be done alone or with friends depending on your social energy. Depending on the weather, you can have a bonfire, roast marshmallows over the fire and have s’mores. Camping in the backyard is a good way to be adventurous with having the security of your own bed nearby.
Let out your inner child and have a fashion show while you clean out your closet or make a pillow fort. Try out MuFridgefood.com, which takes ingredients that you have at your house and puts them into a meal you can make.
If you like going outside or getting active, then there are plenty of free things in Albert Lea to do. Going on a walk is a good way to spend a day especially if you do the whole 4.5 miles around Fountain Lake. If you want less of a commitment, try the Blazing Star Trail and choose the distance that works best for you.
Other free services are the public library and skate park. You can paint rocks to put around town or, on March 12, the public library is hosting Painted Pavers which upgrades the arts and crafts to bricks. The library is also hosting the history of the ALPD on March 14.
Geocaching is an online hide and seek game of treasure hunt using GPS to track down caches all over town. Combine this with a walk, bike ride, or have a picnic with friends.
You could also consider volunteering at local organizations and getting some National Honor Society hours done. Check with Ms. Blizzard.
There are other things to do in Albert Lea that might cost a small price to enjoy. Mall Cinema 7 has movies for $5.50 on Tuesdays and you can get a free popcorn with the purchase of a 44 ounce drink.
From March 14-23, it costs $10 to watch The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center. If you want more culture, the Freeborn County Historical Museum costs $3 for students under 18. They are open Tuesday- Friday.
Finally, if you are looking to be more active, the YMCA has passes daily for $7 for 13-17 year olds, and $13 for 18 and above to go see their gym, workout room, pool, cycling room, and more. If you are in eighth or ninth grade, then you are eligible for a free membership to the YMCA.
