Face to Face: Ahlahasa Takes on Procrastination
November 17, 2017
Procrastination is often seen as a negative thing that only lazy people do. Yet just about everyone does it. At some point or another even you have procrastinated. It’s not all bad, sometimes it’s even a way to put your full effort into work.
Even I, as I am writing this article, have procrastinated until the very last second, but as you can see, this is a pretty dang good article. Other ways that procrastination helps me is I get to have more me time. Without it I and many other people would become way too overwhelmed with our class loads and end up not getting anything done at all. If you get too overwhelmed you just start to give up and you don’t really try on your assignments.
This is why it is better to put off your work sometimes. Now I’m not saying that you should always put off things until the last minute, but it doesn’t hurt to now and again. Sometimes I need to just go home and cool down after a long day of school work and just kick back without having to think about the 786 other things that I really should be doing.
I’m willing to bet that other kids in this school have completely broken down from the stress of the day when your teacher assigns way too many projects and you don’t have enough time to put your full effort in. It doesn’t even have to be school work that you feel like you need to get away from, it can even be hanging out with friends or being around family. I know that I need to put aside time to socialize, but quite frankly I just like being alone. According to Elite daily, fear means something important is about to happen. If you sometimes put off your work, the fear of failing can give you that extra boost of motivation to get you through even your toughest assignments.
You have either heard this story or you have been in the situation yourself. Finishing a paper the night before or an hour before it is due when you had many weeks to complete it. High schoolers and procrastination have gone hand and hand for plenty of years.
According to Newswire, 87 percent of students say they procrastinate and it affects their academic performance. Forty-five percent of those procrastinators say procrastination negatively affects their grades.
I have noticed throughout my high school years that many people are affected by procrastination. Leaving work until the last possible chance to do it, I get it; you’re busy. People argue procrastination produces the best work, which may be true for some people, but for me getting the work done quickly after it is assigned produces the best work. I think procrastination should be avoided even when it seems impossible at times.
For as long as I can remember, I have always found joy in making lists, completing things and crossing them off. This has helped me avoid procrastination and to get my assignments done far before it is due. I find it fun to cross everything off. I can get things done on time so I didn’t have to worry about it the night before. High school has made it harder to do this, but I still try to finish everything early. It gives me a sense of pleasure
I choose not to procrastinate because I hate being stressed. When I have multiple assignments to complete and less than a day to do it or even a weekend, I get stressed easily and it puts me in a bad mood. I sometimes even get to the point where I am so stressed that I don’t even want to work on my assignment. I hate that feeling, so I try to avoid it as much as I possibly can. I find it hard to relax when I have a bunch of things building up, so I don’t procrastinate.
I can’t say that I have never procrastinated before. I think everyone procrastinates from time to time and I probably do it more than I should. Since I have both procrastinated and been on top of my assignments I know that not procrastinating is the better way to do it. During junior year there was a week I worked a lot and I chose to relax instead of getting my homework done. I had a project due at the end of the week and by Thursday night I was stressing because I had little to none of it done. Because of situations like this I chose not to procrastinate, and is why I encourage you not to procrastinate.
Procrastination is different for everyone. If procrastination works for you I can’t stop you from doing your thing, but I challenge you to not procrastinate for one week to see how it works for you.
