Creating New Hobbies
Have you ever wanted to learn about another language or up your chess game? Maybe hang out with your fellow Otakus (people interested in Japanese culture) or contemplate the deeper meaning of the human experience in various films outside of school hours while being around your friends? The new clubs at ALHS have a wide variety of things to offer students this year.
The increase this year is due to more student and teacher interest in various subjects.
New additions this year include the Otaku club, which meets on Wednesdays and is overseen by Mrs. Tran.
“We watch anime (Japanese cartoons) and have a discussion about it,” said junior Meridian Fiscus, who helped to create the club. “We have healthy debates about animes and we have days to hang out and get to know each other.”
In addition the students also discuss manga, Japanese comic books.
The French club meets on Tuesdays and is advised by Mr. Sunnarborg even students who are not taking French are encouraged to come. Students discuss French culture or cook French cuisine with one another.
“Hopefully next year we’ll have more student leadership and establish more traditions,” said Sunnarborg.
The new clubs popping up at ALHS can appeal to all different kinds of students and creates a sense of involvement within the school.
“It’s fantastic,” said Ms. Fischer, who will be the advisor for the upcoming Speech club. “The more the better, not only does it (clubs) help our community but it helps our students be students.”
