Kick off your Sunday Shoes
‘Footloose’ comes to Albert Lea High School
You may be hearing the catchy tune, “everybody cut loose … footloose … kick off your Sunday shoes,” in the halls lately. That’s because Albert Lea High School’s fall musical this year is “Footloose.”
The musical is set in Beaumont in the 1980s, where Ren, the main character, has recently moved from Chicago. The town of Beaumont has a ban against dancing, and Ren disagrees with this. He tries to talk the preacher, who is head of the city council, to allow there to be dancing. In the end, everything works out and the preacher helps plan the prom, where everybody cuts footloose.
“It’s a very fun classic show with lots and lots of dancing,” said junior Quinn Andersen.
Kailie Drescher, senior, plays Ren’s aunt, Lulu. Drescher has been involved in theater performances since kindergarten. Drescher’s favorite part of acting is getting to perform in front of people.
“[Footloose] is going to be the best [musical] we’ve done in a while,” Drescher said. “The dancing is crazy.”
Andersen plays a teen dancer in the show. She has been involved in theater since seventh grade. Her favorite part of musicals are the cast parties and getting to meeting the audience after the show.
Tanner Shaft, senior, plays a character named Chuck. Shaft’s favorite part of the musical is scene three, which features the song “The Girl Gets Around.” Shaft has been involved in theater for five years.
Footloose will be performed at 7 p.m. on November 21, 22 and 23 in the ALHS auditorium. Admission is $5 for students and $7 for adults. Refreshments will be sold at intermission.
“It’s pretty fun, good dancing and the music is great, up beat and relatable,” Shaft said.
