After weeks drag into months of the same routine, school can start to become a little mountainous. It’s been 112 days (as of January 30, 2012) since Homecoming Week, the last major school spirit week, but that is about to change. Starting January 30, ALHS will begin Winterfest Week.
Every year around the beginning of February, the school holds Winterfest Week, designed to promote school comradery and spirit. This week of fun begins for ALHS the last Monday in January and entails many fun activities for all grades.
Something in which everyone can participate is the school dress up days. This year the dress-up days are as follows: Monday-girls wear blue, boys wear red, and teachers wear white. Tuesday-blackout. Wednesday-Pajama days. Thursday-whiteout. Friday-sports jersey or college gear day.
Winterfest Week is a lot more than dress-up days. It also involves a pep fest on Monday where students nominated for royalty from each grade is announced. There are updates on winter sports and activities, and the ALHS dance team performs. Also, throughout the entire week, students get in free to all sporting events. Then the dodge ball tournament is held on Friday, along with other activities.
The finale is held for 8th and 9th graders on Friday and 10th-12th graders on Saturday with the Winterfest dance, a semi-formal event.
This special week takes a lot of planning and is entirely put on by the student council. Student council president, senior Macy Paul, has been largely in charge of the preparations for Winterfest week.
“The hardest thing is planning the pep fest and coming up with new games for the candidates to play,” Paul said.
Winterfest is the last major school spirit week of the year, so it is meant to carry through until the school year ends. The most important thing to making it a success is for the students to have fun.
“We just want it to be a fun week,” Paul said, “It is something that everyone can enjoy.”
