A vocalist warms up his voice in a bathroom. A flutist rehearses her part of an ensemble under and echoing staircase. Four violinists practice their solos simultaneously in a crowded classroom. On Saturday, January 28, Lakeville South High School was filled to the brim with music.
Dozens of band, choir, and orchestra students, from Albert Lea High School participated in this year’s solo/ensemble contest, including junior Ryan McLaughlin. McLaughlin performed his very first choir solo at this contest, at the insistence of choir director Diane Heaney.
After months of rehearsing their pieces, McLaughlin and his peers are prepared to perform in from of their families, their peers, and—most importantly—a judge.
When the student or students are finished with their performance, their judge gives them a short critique; explaining what they did well and giving them tips on what they need to improve upon. The judge then gives a zero-to-five rating in eight musical categories including technique, interpretation, balance, and intonation. These categories are added up to produce a score out of 40 points.
“I thought everyone I watched did really well,” said McLaughlin. “It’s fun to see the different talents [my peers] have.”
