The second annual Singing with the Stars is happening at ALHS. It was started in 2011 by junior Chrissy Monson, who decided to put it together for a class project.
“We did a project called the “Hero Project,” where we volunteered to do something in our community,” Monson said.
Monson said she decided to do it in honor of choir director, Diane Heaney, who was battling breast cancer at the time. She thought it would be fun to have a singing competition, since it was a choir director it was honoring.
There are 10-12 performances at Singing with the Stars. All competitors are critiqued by a panel of judges. Then, at the end of the performances, the audience casts their vote by placing money in a canister with their favorite performers name on it. The performer with the most money in their canister is the winner.
The money made from the event is all donated to the Albert Lea Cancer Foundation. In 2011, there was a great turnout and over $1,000 was made. This year Monson hopes to raise even more.
“I am hoping for $1,500 to $2,000 this year,” Monson said. “I hope even more people will come and support the event and the cause.”
Singing with the Stars is on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 6:00 pm in the ALHS auditorium.
