New Bieber album skyrockets up the charts and receives criticisms along the way
Christmas music: You either love it or you hate it. Justin Bieber’s new Christmas album, “Mistletoe” is no exception.
The record puts a modern twist on some classic holiday tunes such as “Silent Night”, “The Little Drummer Boy” and many more.
There are also some big names featured in the songs. Music icons such as Mairah Carey, Usher, Busta Rhymes, Boys 2 Men, and The Band Perry sing along with Bieber. Is it silly that I picture all of them drinking coco next to a cozy fireplace with a makeup and camera crew nearby?
It’s no secret that anything Bieber does is open to criticism and YouTube parodies. The population of the world either loves his catchy pop songs, or makes jokes at his expense. Some might say that the remixes on “Mistletoe” have Bing Crosby rolling over in his grave.
One YouTube comment on “All I want for Christmas is You” states “I can’t tell if it’s Mariah Carey or Justin Bieber…” using the classic ‘Bieber sounds like a girl’ philosophy.
Then there are the comments that compliment Bieber and come to his defense. Many say that his version of “Silent Night” is better than the original and brought tears to their eyes. You have to admit, the kid does have an angelic voice.
The title track “Mistletoe” is my personal favorite. It’s a classic Bieber pop tune: catchy beat and super deep lyrics (“Shawty, with you, with you underneath the mistletoe”). The music video involves a love triangle: two beautiful girls fighting for Bieber’s attention by flirtatiously putting scarves on him and taking goofy pictures in a photo-booth. There’s a twist ending, however. He ends up with the brunette and they kiss under mistletoe. Oh man, that was suspenseful.
Remember those Christmas specials you’d watch with your family when you were little? The ones that were on every family network for all of December? “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”? Well, now there’s a Justin Bieber animagic music video for his song “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town”. It has the original “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town” animation with an animated Bieber tagging along in the background in his red sneakers and white hoodie. At one point, it shows an elf writing the name Justin on the “nice list”.
I’m not the biggest “Belieber”, but the kid does have talent. His first record, “My World”, went platinum when he was only 15 years old. What accomplishments have I made compared to him? When I was 15 I was figuring out how to wear foundation while he had millions of teenage girls going crazy over a flip of his beautiful hair.
Christmas music has never been my favorite genre, either. I moan when I hear jingle bells chiming and the drummer boy drumming in the middle of November. Despite of it all, I found myself singing along and feeling festive when I listened to “Mistletoe”. It brought me back to the simple Christmases when I was little, instead of the modern ones of family-fighting and over-eating.
Whether you love him or hate him, “Mistletoe” is already number one on the US Billboard 200 and Bieber is a 17-year-old billionaire.
