Let’s face it. Facebook is getting old. People are tiring of the whining and gossiping that it is littered with. So what’s next? Google Plus did look promising until further research showed it was just another doppelganger of the same social network.
That’s where Twitter comes in; it is a breath of fresh social networking air. Twitter is an online website where you make your own posts (aka Tweets) that people following you can see. In return you can follow people including famous celebrities and see what they are up to. No friend requests necessary.
While Twitter has been around for a while, it is becoming popular among students at Albert Lea High School. Many upperclassmen have opened Twitter accounts this school year. The recent outbreak has started almost a Twitter race for the most followers or the funniest posts.
It is usually not a good thing to be followed by someone: in real life it could result in being kidnapped: however, on Twitter, most people are dying to be followed. Of course getting a decent amount of followers is a hard task to accomplish.
It is easy for celebrities to prosper on Twitter: all it takes for Justin Bieber to get nearly 14 million followers are posts like: “Long day, I’m Tired, Going to Bed.” While for small-town Minnesota high school students can struggle to get more than five followers with posts comparable to Confucius’ Wisdoms.
When asked about his opinion on twitter Senior Tayler Blake said, “ I enjoy seeing my favorite celebrities post funny things”. Blake, who’s username is @blakedbeans, is fairly new to Twitter but is enjoying it.
Of course Twitter can be used for other things besides stalking your friends and favorite celebrities. It is also a helpful way to get information out to people fast. Countless universities use Twitter’s features as a way to update students. This includes Albert Lea: you can now follow updates from Ahlahasa via Twitter, which starting in December should become almost daily updates. Riverland Community College uses its Twitter to update students @RiverlandNews.
Twitter is only going to get bigger, so join in on the party before the cops show. All it takes is a clever user name, an email address and some witty humor that others will enjoy. Welcome to Twitter.
